Ranks are determined by the Scouts' grade level.
Kindergartners are called Lions. First graders are called Tigers, Second graders are called Wolves, Third graders are called Bears, Fourth graders are called Webelos, and Fifth graders are called AOLs (Arrow of Light). Boys and girls may join scouting at any level.
Each rank has established achievements that are called Required Adventures that the Cub Scouts must complete in order to advance to the next rank. The first rank every Cub Scout must earn is the Bobcat- this is a yearly requirement that covers the Cub Scout behavior expectations and review the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.
As recognition and feedback are important to young children, the Cub Scouting advancement plan provides fun for the kids, gives them a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges, and strengthens family understanding as adult family members work with the cub scouts on advancement projects. Cub Scouts are awarded badges, belt loops, and special patches throughout the year to mark their progress.
Once a Cub Scout completes the Webelos achievements and earns the Arrow of Light, they may choose to move on to and join a Scouting Troop.
